may gardens

Delightful, huh? I say Friday is a great day to head over to the Getty Villa to check out that Aphrodite exhibit I’ve been talking about (here and here) and, while you’re there, stroll the grounds and celebrate National Public Gardens Day. I love museum gardens, especially when they transport you to another place and time. I sang their praises for Kirtsy not too long ago, and am thinking of making a Part 2. I enjoy them that much.

Sponsored by the American Public Gardens Association and Rain Bird, National Public Gardens Day helps raise awareness of the botanic gardens, arboreta, conservatories and public gardens across the country. On Friday May 11th, The Getty Villa will be offering a tour of their Herb Garden in acknowledgement of this day. Tour will include Roman recipes, mythological stories and a toga! A ticket is required. Check their site for more info!

la vida es un carnaval

Dreamy, no? I had a whirlwind of a time in Miami and Key West thanks to KIA. They invited LBC to attend their Fun & Forty MPG Ride and Drive program – and who would say no, really? I knew I would have a great time but I didn’t know that I would bond so much with old friends and new – all the while driving down the coast. The experience definitely fits KIA’s reputation for being a fun car, to say the least. From South Beach to the Keys, we drove through beautiful neighborhoods echoing Spanish architecture and romance, took in the beauty of the ocean and stopped for delicious meals along the way. I wrote all about my trip at Latina Bloggers Connect, stop by and have a read!

A few weeks ago, CGC asked me if I’d like to sample a bottle of Echelon Wine. The question should have been – Is there any reason why I would not want wine delivered to my door to sample. Now, if you know me, I’m sure you’ll agree that I’m not much of a drinker. However, I do enjoy a nice glass of red with my dinner. My favorite kind of wine is usually sweet with a soft texture. Last night, I set the table and poured the red for an evening of dining with my husband, who has been working all day and freelancing in our home studio all through the night. Echelon Red Blend was very smooth with hints dark chocolate, spice and black cherry. After two incredibly hectic weeks – It was quite the enjoyable experience.

What is your favorite kind of wine? Red? White? Do you have any pairing suggestions?

I felt it was high time I took my son to a rave. A little techno didn’t hurt anyone, right? This time I decided I’d leave the Wonder Woman cape and lunchbox at home though, you know. I kid, I kid. This is actually a super cool art show at MOCA curated by Mr Beastie himself Mike D. The exhibit explores the relationship between music and imagery – and how one inspires the other. Tons of electronica and break beats to boot – pretty much my car playlist. I have no idea what kids are listening to these days, which was a dreamy concept when Peanut Wolf spun a bit of Din Daa Daa, Paper Thin and of course Paul Revere. The show and festivities end this weekend. I say you officially have Cinco de Mayo plans! Want to know more? Check out my write-up for CBS Best of LA.

an evening of artistry

I’ve talked about Artistry before (HERE and HERE). I have tons of their products and cannot get enough of their Creme LuXury. Last week, Artistry invited me to attend a roundtable discussion at the Roosevelt – an evening of apple martinis, sushi and girl talk. It was a great time to say the least, and it’s always fun hanging out with Monique and Yolanda. Artistry has a new product that I’m sure you will love – A Retinol treatment that’s super gentle with lasting results. As you know, I’m a champion for Vitamin A. I’ve been using it on my skin for 10 years and swear it’s why my face has very few lines. I have one between my brow, but that comes from years of furling at people who say odd things coupled with the infamous tween mom “what are you doing” face. Vitamin A to the rescue!

I talk more about the evening and Artistry’s new products over at Latina Bloggers Connect. Stop on by.

Do you have a skincare treatment you can’t live without?

skirball

Ancient Hebrew Kingdoms was part of the lesson plan this month for Social Studies so we headed to the Skirball. It’s such a beautiful place. I’d been there once when my son was much younger, and didn’t realize how big the space actually was – we spent most of our time aboard Noah’s Ark. You can spend a lot of time in there if you have little ones. This time around, we explored the routes from Rome to Israel, the intricate Menorahs and breathtaking Synagogue gallery. The museum covers the 4,000-year history of Jewish people – It merits several visits to really take it all in. My son had so many questions, and it was hard to just stick to ancient history. We will certainly be back for their programs. How about you guys? Did you ever visit the Skirball? Have you been to a museum that opened your world to another culture or religion?

class is in session

Back in January I wrote post about my new venture in homeschooling. I was nervous, excited and anxious to see what it was all about. I started a color-coded calendar and had all the days “figured” out. That lasted, oh, about two weeks. I quickly learned that we had to take it day by day. My son had gone to a public school his whole life. I was very happy with the school, the teacher, the sense of community and the strong parent/teacher body. But – that quickly ended at 5th grade graduation. In the fall, we entered (drum roll) middle school – a huge place where all three elementary schools joined forces under one roof. Again, I was very happy with the district and felt my son was in excellent hands. However, the classroom size proved to be too overwhelming for my son. Some kids just do better in smaller settings. I know. I was one of them. But that’s just one factor that led to my decision to homeschool – way too many to list here. I work from home and decided I could give my son the one on one time he needed. Homeschooling is not for everyone, and if you work from home, it certainly means lots of long nights playing catch up. But, it’s so worth it to me. Recently, I helped launch our LATISM LA party in conjunction with the White House summit. It was an extraordinary evening and we were so excited to meet leaders in Education, who are working hard to create change. At the summit, my son got to ask Ken Salazar about the future of classrooms. Have a look! I’m so proud of this little dude right here.

and…i’m back

I’m experiencing that surge of energy that comes from several weeks of feeling under the weather. I started yoga and acupuncture again, and it’s amazing how the simple act of stretching and getting your circulation flowing can shift everything. I think it’s exactly what my body was asking for. I have so much catching up to do on this blog, but that’s what multiple posts are for! In the meantime, I leave you with the latest addition to my closet. Sometimes a new pair of shoes shift everything as well, especially when they are design-focused with a pop of color.

And guys, if you live in LA make sure you head to the Getty Villa and LACMA for a bit of ancient Mexico and Greece beauty for the senses. Peruse my last few posts to see pictures of the shows or check out my write-up about it HERE and HERE for CBS Best of LA.
